Nutella Swirled “Blondies”

Feb 08

So I missed World Nutella Day :( , but I am still happy to share this recipe adapted from the Cookin’ Canuck.  And for the chocolate party– I love this group of bloggers!  Nothing is better than creating new recipes with chocolate and another ingredient each month!!

I love blondies– I think even more than brownies, but sometimes, I just need some semi-sweet/milk chocolate instead of white chocolate. Then, add the nutella on top– this takes the cake!

It was a great night in my house– eating these nutella swirled “blondies” while watching tv on our NEW COUCH!  Happy Days.

Ingredients

  • 1 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup (12 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 1/2 cups (packed) brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Servings: 24
  • Difficulty: easy

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 13- by 9-inch metal baking pan with foil, with foil edges hanging over the side (great for clean-up). Spray the foil with cooking spray.

In mixer, combine together melted butter, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Mix flour, baking powder  and salt into the mixture into sugar mixture until just combined. Add chocolate chips and stir to combine.

In a medium bowl, stir together cream cheese, Nutella and egg yolk until completely combined.

Transfer blondie mixture to prepared pan and spread evenly. Drop the Nutella mixture by tablespoonfuls over the blondie mixture. Using a butter knife, swirl in the Nutella mixture (this was harder for me than I thought).

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out with a few crumbs, about 25 minutes. When testing, be sure to insert the toothpick into a section with blondie, rather than Nutella.

Cool the blondies, in the pan, on a wire rack until completely cool, about 2 hours. Holding the overhanging foil, lift out the blondies. Cut into squares and serve.

I like to change recipes with all regular flour to half whole wheat and half regular– the flavor doesn’t really change, and it makes me feel healthier :)

I feel bad that I never give blondies their due – I think they’re delicious but I never make them. Your version looks perfectly dense and moist, and I can never resist Nutella. And I LOVE the Chocolate Party too. It always challenges me and it so much fun meeting all of you amazing bloggers.
